There is something magical and therapeutic about being out on the water in a kayak.

One of our favorite places to kayak is Lake Michigan. The peaceful sound of the water. The rocking of the gentle waves. The sounds of birds and the water lapping along the shoreline. You can simply feel the stress melt away as you paddle your way through the beautiful waters.

While soaking up the sounds of nature, you can loose yourself in the pondering of your own mind - reflect on the beauty of nature or self reflect on your own thoughts and feelings.

Although we kayak together, there are small pockets of solitude. Maybe one of us has paddled slightly ahead and the other lingers behind admiring the beauty of their surroundings. We have moments of silence where we are simply soaking it all in and are left to our own musings. We come away with our own therapeutic experiences out on the water.

My time spent making art is meditative and therapeutic. It’s a time of solitude…that is, except for the pets. It’s a time for me to self reflect on the happenings in my own life. To process whatever is going on in that moment - good or bad, happy or sad.

It is easy to think of solitude in a negative light - as something filled with loneliness. But, there is beauty in solitude.

Incorporating moments of solitude can have a positive impact on our life. Times of solitude can be full of peace. It gives you space to self reflect and cultivate your overall wellness. It can be a time for you to simply exist with no outside pressure to meet any expectations. It can help you calm down and recharge if you are feeling anxious, stressed, angry or overstimulated. Creating space for moments of solitude can also boost your creativity. You may even find that practicing moments of solitude can help you build healthier and stronger relationships with those in your life.

There is beauty in those moments of solitude.
