Serenity is the state of being calm, at peace, untroubled. Being in a state of serenity often means that there is an absence of mental stress or anxiety.

While working on this piece, I felt as if I was in a state of serenity. I felt completely at peace. I was able to fully enjoy trying out oil pastels for the first time and simply lose myself in the making of this. There was no stress or pressure for it to be perfect.

My time spent on this piece was like a calm before an unexpected flutter of chaos.

A couple days after I finished it, our oldest cat came down with a sinus infection. I won’t go into the details, but the week following was anything but serene. One moment we would see improvement in her health as her body was responding well to the antibiotic from the vet. We had moments full of hope as we would see glimpses of her normal self return. The next moment, our hopes would be dashed. We had this inkling feeling that we needed to start preparing our hearts for saying goodbye.

We don’t know what Lily’s story was like before we adopted her. We know that she was roughly around 7-9 years old and that she had been adopted and returned to the humane society three times prior. We brought her home to her forever home…we never came to understand why she had been returned so many times.

As I reflected back on my time spent creating this piece and the days leading up to Lily falling sick, the word “serenity” kept popping up in my head. I kept thinking of how serene it was to work on this and how while Lily’s life prior to us may not have been serene, hopefully, we were able to bring some serenity to her life.

For me, this piece is a reminder of all the peaceful, happy moments full of love that we had with our Lily and the serenity she brought into our lives.

Maybe, just maybe, this piece can serve as reminder of the moments of serenity in your life as well.
