Growing up, one of my grandparents had a bird feeder right outside a window by their kitchen island. I fondly remember sitting and watching the countless number of birds that would visit and asking my grandparents about the ones I didn't recognize. These fond memories are what sparked my creation of my Field Notes Series, which is expanding one piece at a time. The Northern Cardinal has been a much requested bird to add to this growing collection. 

 

I was given the spark of inspiration by someone sharing the importance cardinals have in their life. Through that, I learned that there is a saying that “loved ones are near when cardinals appear.” Oddly enough, inspiration for this piece came during the anniversary month of my dad passing. Call it fate, coincidence or whatever you want. I tend to get inspiration for bird pieces in spring, but maybe the inspiration came this April to give a new perspective on this bird that means so much to others because it connects them with lost loved ones, even if it’s not the same for me.

Fun fact: Cardinals are an iconic bird. So iconic that it is the state bird for 7 states, and many sports teams, ranging from high school to professional, have the cardinal as their mascot.
